Taliban are silent on crimes against Shia Afghans

A big crime is remaining silent on crimes against minorities, like Shia Afghans, and this even as a ruler of a country. This is has been the case with the Taliban in Afghanistan since their gaining power on 15 August 2021.

An armed attack in the Shiite region of Herat has left six Shia Afghans dead, including two Shia clerics, and three injured. A source told reporters that this incident happened around 2:00 p.m. local time, in the "National Furnace" area of Jibril town in the 13th district of Herat city. This source added that unknown gunmen in a "Fielder" type car shot at these citizens in a "three-wheeler". The source said three people were injured in this incident.

The Ministry of Interior and the local officials of the Taliban in Herat have not yet said anything about the investigation into these attacks and have not arrested any individual or group in connection with these attacks. Moreover, the ministry of the Taliban did not react to the attack that killed two other clerics in November 2023.

One reason why the Taliban remain silent about crimes against Shia and Hazara might be that they follow a strict form of Sunni Islam, called Wahabism or Deobandism. Furthermore, all high-ranking Taliban leaders belong to the Pashtun ethnic group. Thus they are discriminatory against Shia Afghans and racist towards the non-Pashtun peoples of Afghanistan, in particular Hazara and Tajik Afghans.
